Japan Center is a cultural and economic centre, occupying the blocks between Fillmore, Laguna, Geary and Post at the heart of San Francisco's historic Japantown (Nihonmachi) neighborhood at 1737 Post Street. It is composed of the eastern part (the Miyako Mall and the Kintetsu Mall), the Bridge, and the western part (the Kinokuniya Mall and Kabuki-Sundance Theater). Between the Miyako Mall and Kintetsu Building are the five-tier, 100-foot-tall Peace Pagoda and the Peace Plaza, where seasonal festivals are held. Peace Pagoda was designed by world-famous Japanese architect Yoshiro Taniguchi.
Japan Center was opened in March 1968. In 2007 a Japanese company sold two of the malls to Los Angeles-based 3-D. Walking through the shopping centre and the Mall area gives one feeling as if walking through mini Japan. For those who travel to Japan Center by car the center offers underground parking for free. For those travelling by public transport take bus lines 2, 3, 38 or 38L. The Japan Center has many stores that carry authentic Japanese products including books, furniture, fantastic food and many more. The Kabuki Hot Spring, an authentic traditional Japanese bathhouse, is the Center's most famous tenant. The Kinokuniya Bookstore offers a great variety of books in many foreign languages. Shige Antiques offers yukata (lightweight cotton kimonos) for kids and lovely silk kimonos. Ichiban Kan is a Japanese dollar store where you can pick up fun Japanese kitchenware, tote bags decorated with hedgehogs, and erasers shaped like food. Daiso is one of the most popular places in the mall selling goods for just $1.50. Delightful San Francisco Isobune restaurant is one of the best sushi restaurants. Benkyodo Bakery at the corner of Buchanan (aka Osaka Way) & Sutter offers Japanese sweet dessert/pastry.
